Adding and organizing product categories – Store Setup and Design – Understanding the Shopify platform

Adding and organizing product categories, also known as collections, is an important step in organizing your products and making it easier for customers to navigate your store. Here’s how you can add and organize product categories in Shopify:

  1. Access the Collections Section: In your Shopify admin dashboard, go to “Products” and then click on “Collections.” This is where you manage your product categories.
  2. Create a New Collection: Click on the “Create collection” button to start creating a new product category. Provide a title for the collection that accurately represents the group of products it will contain.
  3. Set Collection Conditions: In the collection settings, you can define the conditions that determine which products are included in the collection. You have several options to choose from, such as product tags, product types, vendor, price range, and more. Select the conditions that match the products you want to include in the category.
  4. Customize Collection Layout: Customize the appearance and display settings for the collection. Choose the number of products shown per page, the sorting order, and the collection’s overall layout. You may also have options for displaying additional information like product descriptions, prices, or reviews.
  5. Organize Collections: To ensure a clear and intuitive navigation experience, you can organize your collections into a logical hierarchy. Use the “Subcollections” feature to create subcategories within larger categories. For example, if you have a “Clothing” collection, you can create subcollections for “Tops,” “Bottoms,” and “Accessories.”
  6. Assign Products to Collections: Once you have your collections set up, you need to assign products to the appropriate categories. When editing a product, you’ll find a section where you can select the collections the product should belong to. Assign each product to the relevant collections based on its characteristics.
  7. Customize Collection Pages: Shopify allows you to customize the appearance of your collection pages. You can edit the collection template to modify the layout, add custom banners, adjust product display options, or even use custom code to tailor the page to your specific needs. This customization can be done using the Shopify theme editor or by editing the theme code.
  8. Test and Refine: After setting up your product categories, it’s important to test your store’s navigation and collection pages. Ensure that the categories are displayed correctly, products are assigned accurately, and the collection pages are user-friendly. Make any necessary adjustments to improve the browsing experience for your customers.

Remember to regularly review and update your product categories as your store grows and evolves. Organizing your products into logical categories helps improve the browsing experience for your customers and makes it easier for them to find what they’re looking for.

By carefully organizing your product categories, you make it easier for customers to find the products they are looking for and navigate your store efficiently. Well-structured collections also contribute to a visually appealing and organized storefront, which can positively impact the customer’s shopping experience.
