ODI components migration through Smart Export and Smart Import

In Oracle Data Integrator (ODI), the Smart Export and Smart Import features allow you to migrate ODI components, such as projects, interfaces, mappings, and more, between different ODI environments or repositories. Here’s an overview of how Smart Export and Smart Import work:

  1. Smart Export:
    • Smart Export is used to export ODI components from a source ODI environment or repository into an export file.
    • Launch ODI Studio and connect to the source repository.
    • Right-click on the desired component (e.g., project, interface) or a higher-level folder in the Designer Navigator.
    • Select “Smart Export” from the context menu.
    • Choose the components you want to export and specify the export file location.
    • Optionally, you can customize the export options, such as including dependent objects or security settings.
    • Click “Finish” to start the export process.
    • ODI will generate an export file containing the selected components and their dependencies.
  2. Smart Import:
    • Smart Import is used to import ODI components from an export file into a target ODI environment or repository.
    • Launch ODI Studio and connect to the target repository.
    • Right-click on the desired folder in the Designer Navigator where you want to import the components.
    • Select “Smart Import” from the context menu.
    • Browse and select the export file generated from the Smart Export process.
    • Review the components included in the export file and select the ones you want to import.
    • Optionally, you can customize the import options, such as overwriting existing components or preserving security settings.
    • Click “Finish” to start the import process.
    • ODI will import the selected components from the export file into the target ODI repository.
  3. Handling Dependencies:
    • When using Smart Import, ODI automatically resolves dependencies between the imported components.
    • If a component being imported depends on other components that are not included in the export file, ODI will prompt you to select the missing dependencies or provide the necessary information for their resolution.
  4. Post-Import Validation:
    • After the Smart Import process, it’s important to validate the imported components to ensure their correctness and consistency.
    • Review the imported components, mappings, interfaces, and their associated configurations.
    • Test the imported components to verify their functionality and integration with the target ODI environment.

The Smart Export and Smart Import features simplify the migration and deployment of ODI components between environments or repositories, reducing manual effort and ensuring consistency. However, it’s crucial to carefully plan the migration process, considering any dependencies, version compatibility, and backup strategies to avoid data loss or conflicts during the migration.
